ACT, INVOLVE AND INSPIRE

Harmony between man and its environment is the essence of a healthy life and growth. Nature , when taken care of, provides us with everything we need but it can also express its fury if abused. Though we cannot reverse the effect of our actions , we can collectively work together in restoring the damages done by looping in the younger generation. Quality of life of our future generation depends on our decisions today. It’s high time we take on responsibility towards building a sustainable environment by acting, involving and inspiring our younger generation.

The Need of the Hour

Environment preservation should be introduced as a core subject from pre-school. As Asutosh Acharya ,Project Scientist B (Arctic Ocean Atmospheric Studies) ESSO-NCPOR says- “It is said that, there is a curious naturalist in every child. What a child learns early in life for cleanliness , nature, environmental protections would stay with him all his life. Teachers can help nurture affection for the environment through various formal and informal teaching methods. The school and college education boards have to prioritise environmental education as a significant part of the curriculum.”

Making a Difference

Teachers can promote digital notes, and there must be additional marks for less paper waste during examinations. Students should be encouraged to adopt nature friendly bags, practice energy savings, eat sustainable food/decrease meat consumptions/increase vegan diet, save water etc. Students activities towards sustainable environment should be honestly monitored jointly by teachers at schools/colleges and parents at home. Some additional grading system may be adopted based on their Pro-Environmental- Behaviours (PEBs).

Teaching Empathy

Empathy is an important value that schools need to inculcate in children. Students need to understand that all living creatures need to be looked after. Schools should have programmes to adopt one plant in school and one at home and ask students to take complete care of it. There must be awareness about disposal of wet, dry and e –waste. Schools should formulate environmental friendly policies from planting trees to cleanliness drives. Events like ‘A walk to School Day’ or ‘Create No trash day’ amongst pre-schoolers and elementary children involving parents can be held so that students can actually experience environmental practices in daily life.
